Pacific Tropical Cyclone Alert

This is the latest update from the National Weather Service as of 8:00 PM Sunday:

For the central North Pacific…between 140W and 180W:

Central Pacific (CP93):

A broad area of low pressure located about 1100 miles east-southeast of the Hawaiian Islands is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms and is nearly stationary. Environmental conditions are forecast to be conducive for further development, and a tropical depression is expected to form by mid-week as the system begins moving west-northwestward or northwestward across the Central Pacific.

* Formation chance through 48 hours…medium…50 percent.

* Formation chance through 7 days…high…90 percent.

Western East Pacific:

A large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms is located well to the west-southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula. Environmental conditions appear favorable enough for some gradual development, and a tropical depression could form during the next few days while the system moves slowly west-northwestward to northwestward across the western portion of the East Pacific.

* Formation chance through 48 hours…low…30 percent.

* Formation chance through 7 days…medium…60 percent.

As stated earlier, the Central Pacific hurricane season typically becomes more active in August and September, making now a good time to review emergency plans and disaster supply kits.

• Check your emergency kits and fill up on supplies. 14 days of food, water, medication. 
• Charge your batteries and have flashlights handy.
• Fill up your gas tank on your car.
• Check in with family and friends: how you will get in contact and where you will go during an emergency or evacuation? 
• Know your zone: check if you are in a flood prone area or exposed to strong winds. 
• Prepare your home: trim trees, clean gutters, seal gaps, bring in loose outdoor items. 
• Check insurance policy and have information handy.
